This One Detroit report looks back at the history of the controversial Detroit Incinerator, as environmentalists and residents hold an official celebration marking its closure earlier this year. Episode 208/Segment 2

Dr. Kriebel’s (University of Massachusetts Lowell) research explored the question, What if cancer prevention programs successfully eliminated smoking within the population? What would the trend in new cases of cancer look like after this elimination? This presentation at the 2019 Cancer and the Environment Symposium reveals that even for cancers commonly attributed to smoking, such as lung and bladder cancers, there are other important causes that need to be addressed. Rates of new cases of cancer not explained by smoking are particularly high in some counties, including Allegheny County in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Detroit's trash-to-energy incinerator has been the center of debate recently because of a decision that must be made to continue its operation or move to a new business model for solid waste. Capable of burning up to 4000 tons of trash per day, the Detroit garbage incinerator is the largest of its kind in the nation. After nearly 20 years of operation, the Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Authority will have to decide its fate by June 1, 2008.

The concept to build Detroit's incinerator arose in the mid 1980's amid serious concerns about future landfill capacity. Protesters and environmentalists unsuccessfully campaigned against its construction, protesting against perceived public health threats and environmental impacts. Due to unexpected debt, the facility has been a huge financial drain on the city, alleviated partially by steam sales and other revenue generated from the incineration process.

Several options for solid waste management are now being considered and expanded recycling has become the biggest point of contention for those opposed to incineration. If the city were to move away from the trash-to-energy incinerator, landfill would be its alternative.

The bill, which would force Baltimore's Wheelabrator trash incinerator and medical incinerator to clean up or close down, passed through a preliminary council vote and is due for a final vote in the coming weeks.
